AVG Secure Browser
Price: $
AVG is one of the most popular names out there in the world of security software. Now, they have launched their own privacy-backed browser called the AVG Secure Browser. It is a Chromium-based browser that puts special emphasis on privacy and security. With integrated features like a built-in VPN, ad blocker, anti-tracking tools, and more, it is a solid choice for people who want to browse the internet worry-free.
Built-in VPN and encryption
The AVG Secure Browser comes with a built-in VPN that encrypts browsing data, tabs, history, and bookmarks, masking your IP address for anonymous browsing. While it is limited in terms of usage on the free version, it is still great to have for no cost at all within your browser. In terms of usage itself, the VPN is pretty decent when it comes to speed and bandwidth.
The server network is below average, though, with only 59 servers in 37 countries so far, but the company is looking to add more. There is the 256-bit AES encryption on top, which adds more sweetness to the mixture.
Ad and tracker blocking
AVG Secure Browser comes with a built-in ad blocker and tracker blocker. By blocking unwanted ads and background trackers, you can greatly improve browsing speeds but also make your browsing private. With the addition of a stealth mode, which is a codeword for private browsing, aka incognito, this is a browser with a complete set of privacy features.
The Privacy Guard blocks ads and trackers by default, improving page load times and reducing digital fingerprinting. There are customizable settings, including the level of blocking (from basic to strict). However, there are still many ads and trackers that get through, making this not 100% effective.
Unique PIN lock and password manager
One of the standout features that the AVG Secure Browser has is the PIN lock. It requires the user to set a PIN that can be used to access or block access to the browser. It adds an additional layer of security if your PC is often used by anyone other than you.
Then there is the built-in password manager, which securely stores and autofills credentials on whichever website you are on. This simplifies the equation while maintaining security. While these are good to have, it is important to note that these rely on AVG's ecosystem, and if you don't want to trust AVG, then it may not be worth it for you.
A great alternative for traditional browsers
The AVG Secure Browser is a great alternative for people who are using Chrome or similar browsers and desire a mix of privacy and usability. It offers a familiar Chromium interface, cross-platform syncing, and a few privacy features such as the built-in VPN, PIN lock, and ad-blocker.
What is AVG Secure Browser best for?
Users seeking a free, privacy-focused browser with a built-in VPN for casual browsing or secure transactions, particularly those already invested in AVG’s ecosystem.
